The gallery was set up as Dogenhaus Galerie by Jochen Hempel in Leipzig in 1992. From the outset, the gallery has showcased both local and international artists.
Since 2004, the gallery has occupied Hall 4 on the Baumwollspinnerei premises. Formerly housing a steam generator, the space provides the gallery with an extensive exhibition area. Specially devised for the gallery, a customized system of mobile walls enables each individual artist to modify the spatial parameters, thus incorporating the space into the respective exhibition concept.
Longstanding collaborations with international galleries give artists, who are not represented by Jochen Hempel, the opportunity to exhibit their work in Leipzig.
In January 2012 the gallery was reopened as Galerie Jochen Hempel.
