Leipziger Baumwollspinnerei

Worker's housing, Thüringer Straße 2 - 14

The blocks built to house workers on the eastern boundary of the Spinnerei-owned land were constructed in the late 19th century and early 20th century. The road is characterized by uniform peripheral buildings in Gründerzeit and art nouveau style. The floor plans of the apartments within the buildings are different, however: a storey may be divided into four, three or two apartments, and there are also buildings with a single, quite luxurious apartment on each floor. Spinnerei factory and administrative workers lived here. This development also contained the Spinnerei’s first Kindergarten, which had an idyllic garden attached.

In the GDR period, practically all of these apartments had tenants, but now this is only the case for Thüringer Strasse 6. Apartments in building no. 12 are partially occupied. All the buildings are in need of repair. In 2007, the Spinnerei bought back the buildings for the workers’ housing, which had been sold by the previous owners of the site. Repairs and renovations to these former workers’ homes should begin in 2009. As with the development of the factory site itself, the plan is for a sustainable yet original new lease of life.
